Breathing: The Feel-Good Facelift
By Charlotte Vohtz of Green People
Our skin cells need sufficient oxygen to survive and function properly. Without sufficient oxygen and removal of carbon dioxide our skin won’t feel smooth, supple or have a healthy glow. Our unique respiratory system ensures that we draw oxygen from the air into our lungs, pass it on to the red blood cells that carry the oxygen to the cells and removes surplus carbon dioxide. The blood acidity level (pH-level) can be disturbed to such a degree that your skin and your whole body don’t get enough oxygen. You will start feeling tired and your complexion becomes lacklustre and dull-looking. Continued poor oxygen supply to your skin cells will make you more prone to thinning of the skin and premature wrinkling. This lack of balance can occur if your breathing rate is either too fast or too slow or if you breathe polluted or stale air so make sure you get plenty of fresh air and keep your circulatory system healthy! The pH-level of your blood can also be affected if you constantly eat lots of acid-forming foods, such as; red meat, eggs and food containing sugar and white flour or if your circulation is poor or suffer from lung, heart or kidney disease.
